The Diaspora Experience: Politics, Ethics and Aesthetics of Emigrants from the Chinese Borderland
In this age of globalization, diaspora studies offer important insights into the massive dispersal of peoples from their homelands as a political, cultural and moral force in the modern world. Challenging the methodological nationalism inherent in many area studies and social scientific theories, research on diasporas has grown by leaps and bounds in the past several decades. While the Chinese diaspora has long been an object of inquiry for historians, literary scholars, and social scientists, diasporas originating from Mainland China’s borderlands have received less systematic and comparative attention. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to spotlight the experience of diasporas from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Tibet and examines their various modalities of political engagements, cultural and artistic practices, and ethical and ideological formations.
